Strong Softball Season Ends with 5 Eagles Making All-Conference
Head coach Jon Cox said this was a huge year for the College of the Siskiyous softball program. The Eagles' 22 wins were the most in a season since he started in 2012, and they were in the race for a playoff spot until the final day.
"It creates so many good memories and validates all the hard work," Cox said.
The Eagles had an eight-game winning streak late in their Golden Valley Conference season, which lifted them to a 12-8 record and third place finish behind Feather River and Lassen.
They were rewarded in the end with five players earning All-Conference recognition. Sophomore Alexes Collier was 1st Team outfield, sophomore Kaelyn Lange was 1st Team pitcher, sophomore Rylee Reasoner was 1st Team catcher, freshman Megan Boudro was 1st Team infield, and sophomore June Woster was 2nd Team infield.
Collier, Lange and Reasoner were all repeat 1st Team All-Conference picks.
Collier, Lange, Reasoner and Woster were four of the seven sophomores recognized after their final home game on April 18, a 13-6 come-from-behind victory that included clutch home runs by Lange and Reasoner, completed a doubleheader sweep of Butte, and capped their eight-game win streak.
The other sophomores recognized were pitcher Alexis Perez, catcher/infielder Remie Strahm and catcher Maddi McClure.
All the sophomores are Scholar Athletes and most of them listed the team's trip to Costa Rica as their favorite Siskiyous memory in the player profiles announced during the Sophomore Day ceremony by athletic coordinator/eligibility specialist Kevin Bradford II.
This was the third year in a row the Eagle softball team stayed in the playoff hunt until late in the season, and it could have been even better. The Eagles lost eight one-run games, including four in conference, both ends of their season-opening doubleheader at Hartnell in early February, and a 3-2 game in late February at San Mateo against the team that went on to claim the No. 1 seed in the Northern California Regional playoff bracket.
"We lost so many close games, but we kept believing all year," Cox said. "As a team we kept believing in one another." Then, during their winning streak, "everybody stepped up and had great at-bats, we played great defense and got great pitching."
The winning streak put them in position to place second and earn a playoff spot, but they would have needed a sweep at Feather River and would have needed Lassen to lose against Butte two days later. Neither of those things happened, but many good things did happen along the way.
As a team, the Eagles had a .308 batting average, .369 on base percentage, and .443 slugging percentage. They hit 22 home runs and scored 242 runs in 40 games, an average of 6 runs per game.
In 20 conference games, they had a .318 batting average, .378 on base percentage, .454 slugging percentage, 40 stolen bases with only 5 caught stealing, hit 9 home runs, and scored 132 runs, an average of 6.6 runs per game.
